Most people know their sun sign as it’s the answer to the that age old question “Sooo what’s your sign?”. Astrologically speaking it is the location of the sun in the spectrum of signs at the exact moment you were born. We begin with the symbolic meaning of the sun and then specifically what it says about you.
Think about the sun in the solar system. It is the center. It radiates light. It is our energy source. It is big, and it is obvious. All the other planets revolve around it. Symbolically this is what the sun represents in our lives. It is where we must shine, and it is where we are energized. The sun is our sense of self. It is the most authentic expression of ourselves. Our sun sign reveals our gifts, as well as our challenges. The sun is known as one of the personal planets in astrology, which means, when we understand its energy we can interact with it in a more personal way. We can exert some choice on what and how it’s manifesting in our lives. So much like everything in astrology (and it life) the only constant is change. How or what we change is determined by us. For the true definition of empowerment is conscious choice. So, our sun sign does not necessarily represent who we are, but it presents us with the evolutionary potential of who we must become. The journey to this potential self is the path of self-realization and then self-expression. Where we are on that journey and how we radiate our sun (light) depends on many factors. We may, at times, find ourselves bathed in radiant sun sign light, which is our highest form of self-expression. We may also find ourselves in the shadow of the sun which is a call for introspection, contemplation, and growth.
Of course, our sun sign is just one tiny piece of our whole astrological map, but it is nonetheless important and informative as a tool for self-awareness.
So read on and find where you are on your path…
Sun in Aries…(March 21 – April 19)
The ram…tenacious, proud, ambitious, and assertive these are innate traits for the Aries sun. The archetypal warriors and pioneers they find themselves on a journey of self-discovery, expression, assertion, and courage. To do this, however, one needs a test, a mountain to scale, or a battle to win. Thus, the Aries sun will manifest plenty of opportunities to stand up, defend, assert, confront, protect and survive. They can rely on their innate gifts of clear instincts, and determination to act spontaneously. From politics to parenting the form means nothing. The point for the Aries sun is to find personal meaning in what they are defending. It is here however, where we also find the shadow. For the high journey is more about self-discovery than being right. The Aries sun can become so fixated on the comfort of being right that they fall into tyranny, aggression, competition, and ferocity. The win for the Aries sun can become so habitual that constant conflict feels normal and will seem to manifest itself anytime life gets boring. When conflict becomes the norm, and being right supersedes being authentic, the Aries sun loses sight of what is worth defending and the freedom fighter becomes the disillusioned veteran. The path to empowerment for the Aries sun is to use conflict as a tool for inward focus, growth, evolution, and self-discovery.
“Anger is a tool for change when it challenges us to be more of an expert on the self and less of an expert on others” ~Harriet Lerner
Sun in Taurus(April 20 – May 20)
What do I value? Peace? Security? Beauty? These are good questions for the Taurus sun. Do we feel safer when we have a good job, money in the bank, and a beautiful place to live? The Taurus among us would answer yes. Absolutely, the patient, persistent, and enduring energy of a Taurus sun can find value in a job or skill, and derive self-worth from finishing something. Steadfast, calm, habitual, and earthy, the Taurus among us keep us grounded. They remind us to appreciate simplicity. The question must be asked, however, is safety, peace, security ever really guaranteed? Can those things define our self-worth? These are the challenges for the Taurus sun. When we seek safety in the world of form we often get the trappings of materialism; the need to acquire more stuff to feel safer. When the Taurus sun is so security conscious that change becomes an enemy, then stubbornness, boredom, and stagnation can emerge. The Taurus journey calls them to go deeper. Seeking beauty, seeking peace, and seeking security is not inherently wrong. It is, in fact, very right. It is just where we are looking for it that needs to be evaluated, because those things will never be found outside of ourselves. The sunset is beautiful because it wakes something up inside of us. Money reminds us of the safety ever present within ourselves. Paradoxically, this quest takes the Taurus sun to the realization that it is in the letting go of the need for what they think they need that they acquire all that they seek.
“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”~ Lao Tzu
Sun in Gemini(May 21 – June 21)
The Gemini sun wants to learn everything about everything, and they want to learn it their way. So the Gemini sun is here to explore, and explore they do. With innate gifts of curiosity, communication, perception, and intelligence the Gemini sun is aware. Friendly, fun and upbeat they can get even the most silent among us to dialog. Always observant, they easily pick up nuances of meaning that may slip by the rest of us. Like the twins they represent Gemini’s have the ability to see many sides of an issue. Their world moves at a faster vibration than the rest of ours. Like tornadoes they suck the marrow out of life experiences and are invigorated by change and diversity. It is here, however, we find Gemini’s shadow. Change, logic, and learning is a great tool for expansion, but without clear direction, focus, and grounding the Gemini sun can get so lost in the gathering of data that they are blind to the actual solution. Addicted to the thrill of the search and ever- restless, they might find one day that they have never actually gotten anywhere. So concerned with things making sense, life might seem mentally and physically confusing, frustrating, and exhausting. The Gemini’s among us are so present in their mind that often their bodies get overlooked and reflect this frenetic energy. Headaches, insomnia, and anxiety can present. They are called to remember that they have a body, and remind themselves to stop, ground, and breath. The fact is, there isn’t a logical solution to every problem, and there is always something new to learn. Sometimes what is called for is to stop moving long enough to actually allow the information to seep in. For it is in the letting go of the need to know everything that we are gifted with the very knowing we seek.
“Think enough and you won’t know anything.” ~Kenneth Patchen
Sun in Cancer(June 22 – July 22)
The crab is the heart of the zodiac. Not such an odd representation when we remember that a crab has a shell and a heart must be protected. The Cancer sun filters and experiences their world through the lens of feeling. They can travel the terrain of sadness and come out empowered just as easily as they can travel on the path of joy. Needing to feel connected to another, a family, a lineage, and a home, the Cancer suns of the world put down roots. Natural nurturers, Cancer suns are maternal, protective, and sympathetic. The Cancer sun can help the rest of us feel safe. As such, they will probably manifest plenty of lost kittens to rescue in the world. Therein lays the gift and the lesson. It is the quest of the Cancer sun to find the delicate balance between nurturing and co-dependency, empathy, and enmeshment. It is so easy for the Cancer sun to lose themselves in another person’s plight, blurring the edges of self so much that they might lose themselves completely. So, learning boundaries is paramount. It is so easy for the Cancer sun to give, yet receiving might seem foreign. This takes them into vulnerable territory as it calls for learning that requires them to define and claim new parts of themselves. So seeking connection, the Cancer sun is challenged to create their own identity and explore the real meaning of unconditional love. Which is the whole truth to true love isn’t it? It is only by letting go of the need for it in another that we actually realize we had in all along.
“An immature love says I love you because I need you, but a mature love says I need you because I love you.”- Unknown
Sun in Leo(July 23 – August 22)
Leo suns are the light of the zodiac. Natural performers, extroverted, optimistic, sexy, confident, proud, playful, and charismatic, they want to be noticed. They seek applause. This is their journey. Dancers, musicians, painters, and actors Leos are creatively inspired to do something important by their own standards. They have a calling to make others feel better about themselves. To fall in love. To take risks. To lead the charge on a quest of amusement. Leos radiate their sun light and we have no choice but to notice them as they warm our lives. They lead and we happily follow. Acclaim and applause, however, are a heady things and have the ability to solidify egos to grand proportions. Enter into the shadow of the Leo sun. When the applause becomes the definition of self-worth, when it becomes more important than authentic creativity and expression, we find the pandering lion. Play to the masses and the Leo sun becomes a jester, a puppet, and an empty shell. Likewise, applause is temporary, the play runs its course, and there rises another star. If we believe that the applause defines our worth than any rejection feels like a failure. This can push a Leo sun into its shadow of tyranny, control, and rage. The journey then is to stay grounded by focusing on the joy of expression and passion rather than the need for validation, applause, and approval to determine worthiness.
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” ~Howard Thurman
Sun in Virgo(August 23 – September 22)
The journey of the Virgo sun is to change the world for the better one detail at a time. Idealism, humanitarianism, and service are the stones on the path of a Virgo quest. They are lead to perfect a skill that can be shared with others. These are big plans and high expectations for the Virgo sun, but they revel in the details and seem to not mind the work. Virgos have an innate knowing that the means justify the end result so working for a goal is part of the goal itself. They bring in a natural talent for planning, competence, logic, responsibility, and discrimination. With their heightened sensitivity for potential they are perfection detectors. This is the highest of Virgo radiance, but can also be its shadow. Seeking perfection, a Virgo sun can pick apart the most solid of plans causing inaction, and demand standards so high there is no other choice but disappointment. Then, their work that so serves them becomes drudgery in perfections shadow. Perfection, in truth, is a personal ideal. Thus, while fine for motivation, in reality it is an impossible destination. As such, Virgos can be the harshest of critics; yours, mine, and most intensely, their own. Learning to let go of the need for perfection, being gentle with self-criticism, and being realistic about what they are actually responsible for is the path of a Virgo sun. For, it is when they are able to let go of the need for striving for perfection that they realize they had it all along.
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery Quotes
Sun in Libra(September 23 – October 22)
The sign of the scales are on a journey of discovering balance. To do this, a Libra sun will require sides. They require boundaries to bump up against. Thus, they get many of their life lessons from and in the company of others. With the natural grace of diplomacy, cooperation, charm, communication skills, and balanced energy they have a natural gift of connection. Relating to others, hearing opinions, experiencing all shades of right and wrong, just and unjust, fair and unfair, is high Libra terrain. It is here, however, that we also witness the shadow. The real test for a Libra sun is to travel the rocky road of paradox and still keep their peace. What happens to truth when one realizes both sides are right from their perspectives? How can one choose a side? This confusion can stop a Libra sun dead in their tracks. Ever fearful of upsetting someone, picking a side is scary to the Libra sun because their very sense of self and worth can become based on the opinions and approval of others. Realizing that they have a right to take a side (or not), even if that means upsetting the status quo of the relationship, is the ultimate paradox for a Libra sun. The real learning is actually in the letting go of the need for others to define them. Only then can they discover who they really are.
“Truly loving another means letting go of all expectations.”~ Anonymous
Sun in Scorpio(October 23 – November 21)
The Scorpion sun tests the waters of surrender, vulnerability, power, and truth. Passionate, bold, courageous, penetrating, intuitive, and brutally honest Scorpios are the natural psychologists of the zodiac. Meet a Scorpio sun on the street and you get the feeling they know your secrets, which can be both comforting and unnerving. They have the wisdom and courage to lead us into our own shadowy places and help us come out the other side with a sense of clarity and discovery. For there is much to discover in the dark recesses of ourselves, and Scorpios understand this. Think of a moment of crisis, when you faced death or illness, when your life flashed before your eyes, when you let go to be completely vulnerable in front of your partner. In these moments all pretense is stripped away and one is left naked emotionally. That is high Scorpio terrain. The Scorpio sun will also manifest intensity in their lives, many times in intimate relationships, because this is where they must learn. Extremes teach truth. Intensity can become a drug to the Scorpio sun however, as they seek its high. This is where a Scorpio sun must remember to stay above ground and not get lost in the shadow of drama. The Scorpio’s natural gift of perception is a tool not for the faint of heart, because knowing another’s weaknesses and greatest fears gives one great power. With this power comes the ability to heal, but also the ability to control, to manipulate, and to intimidate. So learning about the right use of power, is part of the path for a Scorpio sun. It requires a sense of surrender and integrity based on love rather than the illusion of control.
“Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment.”~Mohandas Gandhi
Sun in Sagittarius(November 22 – December 21)
What do you believe? What do you stand up for? Like the archer that it symbolizes the arrow of truth is aimed a fired. Where is it going? This is the quest for the Sagittarius sun. And quest they will. Sagittarius suns have a need to discover, explore, see different cultures, and to grow in new and exciting ways. Their natural optimism, enthusiasm, and intuition, keep them on the path, as does their innate restlessness and need for freedom. They will manifest plenty of opportunities to travel and explore, either physically or within the confines of their minds, but always looking ahead is paramount for their sanity. And the Sagittarius among us are called not just to explore but weave together a tapestry of discovery and belief to create a web of meaning. They must take all they have gathered and commit to their truth. This is the sun shining forth from Sagittarius. When this light gets too bright however, Sagittarian truth can become dogmatic, for ideals without humility or possibility are stagnant, confining, and quite frankly, dangerous. The Sagittarian shadow of hubris can also be so present that they forget all pretense of reality in their optimism. Then their choices can be darn right stupid. It is the path of creating beliefs that the Sagittarius among us are learning about, and they must remember to remain flexible as perception is ever changing. Beliefs and ideals are important because they have the ability to shape our whole reality. The challenge is to allow their beliefs and ideals to lead them, but not to define them.
“Ideals are like stars’ you will not succeed in touching them with your hands, but like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them, you reach your destiny.”~ Carl Schurz Quotes
Sun in Capricorn(December 22 – January 19)
With natural maturity, responsibility, capability, patience, and integrity Capricorns want to do something in the world and get some credit for their hard work. That is the journey; to find their purpose and be recognized for it. The innate need for solitude and personal distance of the Capricorn sun enables them to pull inward, find personal meaning, and thus contemplate their authentic path. Then and only then, can the Capricorns among us use their innate graceful work ethic, logic, practicality, and perseverance to raise to the inevitable top of their game. That is Capricorn radiance. But what happens when the want to be noticed supersedes the value of the work? When we put the cart before the horse? When we pull so far inward that we get lost in our own confusion? When we give our peers, our society, our family what they want while sacrificing our true purpose? When we base our deeds on the expectations and approval of others we fall into the tragic flaw of Capricorn, which is losing integrity. When we lose ourselves in our work to the point that we are defined by what we do and not by who we are we fall into the Capricorn shadow. Without the guiding light of personal values and integrity a Capricorn sun can be left lonely, despaired, cold, and empty. The path of the Capricorns among us is to listen to others opinions but not attach to them as our own, to not let work define them, and most importantly, to allow their purpose to emerge from the inside out not the outside in.
“We must be willing to get rid of the life we planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.”
― Joseph Campbell
Sun in Aquarius(January 20 – February 18)
The visionaries, inventors, and rebels of the zodiac Aquarius suns have an affinity for personal truth and they must express it. They are the genius among us who think outside the box. Like all free thinkers they experience all side of the acceptance equation. They are the innovators of society but are also easy targets for persecution and alienation as they ask us to question our dogma and status quo. The world needs these free thinkers that challenge us to see the potential of change and give us the inspiration to join the cause. Just as easily as they are doubted they are embraced however, and this dichotomy is the light of the Aquarius sun. What happens when the Aquarius falls into self-doubt or fears the rejection of the group? When consensus wins out over freedom? Then the Aquarius can brood, detach, and be downright cold in their disappointment. They can feel judged, out of place, or just wrong. They can get carried away like a tsunami with a cause that has no personal meaning and life begins to feel meaningless. It takes courage to stand up and be different and courage to feel outside the norm. It takes courage to walk the path less traveled and courage to be authentically you when you are not like the others. It takes courage to detach from letting others tell you just how to behave. Yet, it is in doing so that they find their real tribe.
“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”~Steve Jobs
Sun in Pisces(February 19 – March 20)
Pisces is the final sign of the zodiac. It is the culmination of our journey. The energy of Pisces asks us to move into the possibility of other realities. The rules of form don’t seem to apply anymore. What if this is not all there is? What is hiding in the mystery? What if it has something important to tell us? This is high Pisces terrain. The mystics of the zodiac Pisces are naturally spiritual, intensely intuitive, creative, peace loving, empathetic, and compassionate. Pisces want to navigate the space between our world of form and the one of imagination. Neither is more real to the Pieces. Form and illusion coexist. There is a call to get out of the logical mind and ego as we drift like fishes in an ocean of possibility. The ability to inhabit two worlds at once is the shining light of a Pisces sun. Innately inspired to seek in the unseen Pisces often seek refuge in meditation, prayer, nature, creativity, and imagination. This natural need to check out can also spark the shadow however. When the wide open idealism of Pieces meets the heavy world of form, the depravity of the latter can shock the Pisces into escaping in destructive ways. Addiction, denial, and blame keep the Pisces among us from facing the real work they are called to do. For theirs is a journey of letting go of the security of certainty while holding an innate trust that all will be just as it should. They are asked to surrender themselves and in the process find themselves. Because it is there, in that space between real and unreal, that they realize they never actually give anything up and instead find exactly what they need.
“Surrendering means letting go of your resistance to the total openness of who you are. It means giving up the tension of the little vortex you believe yourself to be and realizing the deep power of the ocean you truly are. It means to open with no boundaries, emotional or physical, so you ease wide beyond any limiting sense of self you might have.” ~ David Deida
